Canadian resume

When I tell people "I'm going to Canada", they always ask "Do you have a work there?", and I always reply "No, I have the permanent residence :D", they say "And a job?", "No, just the permanent residence -_- and I'm happy with that, I'll look for a job there", "Aren't you scared?", "ehh, no really".

Well, should I be scared? I have a great career, I don't need certification, and I'm prepared with my brand new Canadian resume!

Our CVs in Venezuela are VERY different to Canadian resumes, we have to have a picture in the CV, our marital status, our age, and every little thing you can think up that Canadian resumes don't have and don't want ^^ So I studied a lot what I really needed and made my new Canadian resume, so I'm posting here the information I found so you can follow these great advices :)
What about your resume?

Yea, North America considers that illegal to ask such questions regarding age, race and marital status. You only need to have your work and education, along with references.

Good luck you will find a job easy enough if you want to work...

Yes! I didn't know that at first xD

Thank you :D

What's your current job ? Just curious...

I'd have a lot to say about the job market here - I learned so much !

For resume, Tina is right. Privacy is very important and valued, so marital status etc. is a big no no. However, I was really eager to say I was a landed immigrant, just to show I could actually work legally.

And references are very important, even these from abroad - they actually check them !

Hi Zhu, I'm a computer scientist ^^ and I used to teach at the university since you dont need a phD to teach at bachelor level here :)

I know what you mean about letting now you can wor legally ^^ I wrote in my resume that I already have my permanent resident visa and the date I'll be landing.

Do the references have to be of people that previosly worked with you or one of them could be my brother in law? (He is world manager in an International company)

The references are preferably:

1) From you boss
2) From your co-worker
3) Then yeah... family will do ;)

Usually three references are necessary for most positions.

Thank you Zhu! With that I already have some ideas for my references :D

The reference should be all work related. Forget the family/friend thing. That was more in the past, they want to ensure you are a qualified candidate. Could you tell I did a lot of hiringin my past life?

hahahaha, thanks Tina :) I will do that!

Hey Aiglee, thanks for the tips. I'm going to Canada on december with a couple of friends and we hope to stay there until december 2010. We are all chilean, so our resumes are pretty much like yours was, full of personal details.

It's nice to go somewhere those things don't matter, since I have always thought it was very strange to let potential employers about my age or marital status.

I'll put your blog on our required reading list!

Thank you!!! I understand perfectly the feeling, not having to say any of that personal information is a lot better :) Hope you have a great trip here!!

¡Hola! ¿Que tal Aiglee? Congrats on landing the job in Canada.
